Brave Kids- Your Choices Can Save the Earth!

Calling all kids. Are you brave enough to help Save the Earth!

Your choices really count!

You are the new leaders of this world!

The little choices you make every day make a BIG difference in the world.

Your choices are going to lead this world where it goes in the future.

You can lead it to be a clean and healthy world where you have cle an air to breathe and clean water to drink!

   Some of the best choices you can make every day to help save the environment and keep the earth clean and healthy are:
   -Reusing
   -Recycling
   -Reducing
   -Conserving
   -Not littering
   -Being Clean
   -Using less

We will explore these choices more throughout the year.

Today we are going to start with idea of Reusing.

Reusing generally means we use something over again in a new way without changing it too much.

For example, in my refrigerator I have a glass bottle that has water in it. It used to have juice in it. After I finished the juice, I cleaned the bottle. Then I put water in it.

The bottle is being reused as=2 0a water bottle. But I haven't changed it- it is still a bottle.

   A popular way of reusing items for kids is in art products. I have seen art projects where kids have used bottle caps, ice cream pop sticks and other objects to make art sculptures.

They used these objects in a new way. The bottle caps haven't been changed into something else; they are still bottle caps. But now they are being reused to make art projects.

Plastic bottles are often reused in science projects, sometimes to grow seeds. The bottle hasn't been changed into something else; it is being used in a new way. It is being reused.

In the next blog, I'll explain what recycling is and how it differs from reusing.

But now- here's a challenge for all of you Brave kids. Can you think of a way to reuse something in your house?

Send us your ideas and stories- and photos. (But make sure your parents approve.) If we use your ideas and photos, you'll receive a special environmental prize- an autographed copy of the kids' book "How the Land of Littre Became the Kingdom of Clean"- about dragons that recycle and knights that pollute in an endangered kingdom until they work together as a team to keep the kingdom clean!

Green your Cleaners!!!!!

Shouldn't you consider Green Cleaners?

Our kids shouldnt have to hide from our cleaning supplies!! However the government has NO regulations on cleaning supplies. Manufactures are not required to list all chemicals. If you were in a work environment around the same chemicals your job would be REQUIRED to tell you of all the dangers!!! Here is the scary truth about what you clean your house with!!!
In the year since world war II We have placed over 80,000 chemicals in our everyday products. We have done this with out regards to the effects that it has on our children. They are found not only in our cleaning supplies but our personal care items and plastics! This has resulted in our cancer rate reaching an unacceptable level. 1 out of 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer. The toxins in are cleaning chemicals are 3 times as likely to cause cancer than air pollution. The air we breath inside our house is more toxic than the air outside of our home. the consumer product safety commission has stated that our cleaning supplies are not only the most danger products in our home but that they cause allergies, birth defects, cancer and even psychological abnormalities. Constant exposure to "toxic" chemicals in our food, air and water has been shown to lower our threshold of resistance to disease and alter the body's metabolism, causing enzyme dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances. Birth defects, developmental disorders, learning and behavioral disorders have all been linked to "toxic" chemicals used in our homes Stay at home moms are 54% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than working moms!!With all this knowledge why do we continue to expose are children to these chemicals. Our children breath in more air. They drink and eat more than us adults. Their minds are developing as we expose them to all of these hazards. Not only do babies and toddlers put things in their mouth but our children crawl on the floor!! Why are we putting toxins all around our children. Parents are supposed to protect and teach our children. We are also supposed to set examples. Please remember this next time you select a cleaner of your store shelves!! Natural brands are everywhere. Do the responsible thing as go natural!!!!

IITC Update
On Thursday, the House Ways and Means Committee approved the Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008 (HR 6049, formerly the Energy and Tax Extenders Act) a $54 billion energy and tax extenders package that extends for one year tax provisions that expired in 2007, extends for one year certain provisions that expire in 2008, and provides a package of energy tax incentives, including an extension and improvements to the solar ITC.

The bill extends for six years the 30 percent investment tax credit for both residential and commercial solar energy through 2014. Also, the bill increases the annual credit cap on residential solar energy to $4,000 (currently capped at $2,000). The bill removes an existing limitation that prevents public utilities from claiming the investment tax credit and also provides a new 10 percent investment tax credit for combined heat and power systems (microturbines and fuel cells). The bill also allows these credits to be used to offset the alternative minimum tax (AMT). The bill does not use controversial revenue raisers on oil and gas companies, previously included in House proposals.

The total cost of the energy tax incentives is nearly $17 billion, with the solar provisions at just under $1 billion over 10 years. The legislation also extends some tax provisions that expired in 2007, including the R&D credit. House floor action has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 21. SEIA staff will monitor the bill’s progress through the House and into the Senate.

-- The clean energy tax incentives play a vital role in creating new high-wage American jobs, spurring economic growth, promoting consumer purchases of energy efficient products, lowering energy bills for consumers and businesses, and of course reducing global warming pollution.

-- The incentives help the U.S. catch-up with other countries on the development and deployment of clean energy technologies.

-- Every day that passes without an extension places more American jobs at risk. Already clean energy projects in the U.S. are being put on hold while overseas growth in jobs and the manufacturing of equipment is surging overseas.

-- This is slowing our transition towards energy independence and our ability to remain competitive in the new clean economy that is going to be a huge part of the future.
